Jomsom-Muktinath on Wheels

12 Days

Jomsom that is also known as the village beyond the Himalaya is a very well-liked destination in the Himalayan region of Nepal. The village with its ancient name Dzongsam or the New Fort is a town located at an altitude of 2800m in Mustang.

It extends over both the banks of the Kali Gandaki River where the rarest rocks Shaligram can be found which is holy to Hindus. The soaring peaks of Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri naturally performs as a backdrop to this village giving it an extraordinary beauty.

A small trail passes through the Lower Mustang region of Nepal that ends at the village of Kagbeni. Kagbeni is a well known Tibetan influenced village of Nepal that exhibits the strong dedications of Buddha and his path as we can see village filled with prayer wheels and Buddhist monasteries. The trail follows the Kali Gandaki River, which forms the deepest ravine in the world while on the other side lies the Annapurna mountain range and on the other side is Dhaulagiri. We can also view the 8 of the 20 highest mountains of the world from this place. The Kali Gandaki is a quarter of a mile wide river bed during winter the river will be dry, however during the summer and monsoon it fills with rain water and melting snow. The scenery of the trail ranges from forests of brilliant red rhododendrons to rocky cliffs and desert. The culture along the track is a rich mixture of Hindu and Tibetan Buddhism. The trail’s highest point is Muktinath at 3800 m, a holy site of temples, sacred to both Buddhists and Hindus for centuries.

Jomsom to Muktinath on wheels is a new kind of itinerary that starts from Pokhara which is the base for the Jomsom and Muktinath destination. Jomsom has a tenuous road connection with Beni and onwards to Pokhara. The road is a new track which is rough and not a black paved road. Hence, the journey from Benin is on a gravelled road, but full of excitements. The adventure also starts with the roads, driving through the narrow gorge and overnight at Tatopani.

Tatopani is a beautiful natural hot spring pool. People from different corners of Nepal come to bath as it is believed that taking a bath in the pool will help keep away different skin diseases. Accommodation will be provided in a local tea house.

The next morning we move ahead to Gaza and then reach Marpha, an old village of the Himalayan valley. The traditional village of Marpha and the farms around the village is breathtaking. This place is also very popular for Apple farming.

Within 3 o’clock, one can reach Jomsom. During this trip one can view the beautiful mountain range of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna. Once can have an overview of the Pokhara valley to remote mountain deserts of Jomsom. The serene Himalayan view is priceless from this trip.
