Dolpo Trek

15 Days

Dolpo is the largest district of Nepal that covers around 5.36% of the total land mass of the Nepal. The district shares its borders with Tibet on North whereas other districts of Nepal surround this beautiful region which most of the portions are protected by the Shey Phoksundo National Park. The Dolpo district resides in the elevation that ranges from 5,003 to 25,016 ft from the sea level. It is considered as one of the highest region in the world that has inhabitants.

The Shey Phoksundo National Park of Dolpo covers the deepest lake of Nepal known as the Phoksundo Lake in its boundary. Some of the endangered animals that are protected by the park are the snow leopard, musk deer and Tibetan wolf. Although it is the part of Nepal yet the region is highly influenced by the Tibet, both culturally as well as economically.
On visiting Dolpo one can see the earth filled with scattered fortress-like villages and monasteries nestling amongst mountains of stark, ascetic beauty. As the people of this isolated area are cut off from their southern neighbors because the snow covers the southern most part of the year. It is also a fascinating and difficult part of the country to travel. Dolpo has been bypassed by development and until recently by tourism. Although a few anthropologists and geographers had explored the region yet the entire district was closed to foreigners until 1989.

Some of the famous writers around the globe has been impressed by the sight here, and has contributed to the mystique and attraction of Dolpo such as Peter Matthiessen’s “The Snow Leopard” and David Snellgrove’s “Himalayan Pilgrimage”. Both writers visited the Shey Gompa, to the north of the Phoksumdo Lake, in inner Dolpo. This is the goal of most trekkers but this Dolpo trek will take you even further into this mysterious land. Dolpo is Bon-pro country, where people practice a shamanistic religion predating Tibetan Buddhism. Much of Bon-PO symbolism is the opposite of Buddhist practice. You should walk to the right of ancient mud ‘curtains, which are inscribed with swastikas with their arms pointing in the opposite direction to the Buddhist chant of “om mani padme hum”, the Bon-POs chant ‘om me try mu ye SA le duo”, in Tibetan means “in clarity unite’.
